I drew this from a photograph I took while I was in China. It was the first time I was really homesick and missed my mom. I wanted to capture the relationship between a mother and daughter.

Challenge: Rebrand Kiona Vineyards and Winery (Benton City, WA) marketing to 20-30 yr olds, while allowing the winery to stand out among all others.

The small family owned company greatly emphasized the unique environmental characteristics of their vineyards, perfect for making one-of-a-kind wines.

Solution: My design illustrates the characteristics of the Red Mountain (where their grapes are grown) and the family business history. The bright colors and unconventional cut of the label is eye catching, without looking too cheap or overpriced for the younger crowd.

Challenge: Raise awareness about the consequences of illiteracy.

Problem-Solving: "2/3 of students who are still illiterate by the 5th grade will end up in jail or welfare."

I chose to illustrate the two extremities of being literate/illiterate. The words are legible both right-side up and upside-down, (“LITERATE” and “ILLITERATE”) by corresponding to the color-scheme of the characters. The graduate's background is made from pages of an instructional book, to show the possibilities provided with literacy.

Solution: The poster promotes action and change to those who can/cannot read.

Challenge: Create a branding character for Durex condoms that sets the company apart from its competitors.

Problem-Solving: I noticed most branding characters for condoms are condoms. The initial concept was for a banana character, reminiscent of sex ed demonstrations on condom usage. After much research, it seemed banana characters were also over done.

There were several prototypes for the banana-shaped box. The final template was made from tracing a real banana peel.

Solution: The final solution is a seductive monkey clinging to a banana. The packaging is eye-catching and perfectly contains its product. (Condoms would be wrapped individually in circles rather than the traditional square packaging.)

There’s only so much history they will try to teach you in high school. My senior degree project focused on overlooked historical figures– or well known figures who’s acts went unnoticed. The framed images (illustrated characters on collaged photo backgrounds, painted over with paste to create the illusion of historical paintings) are supposed stills from a movie, supplemented with a “movie summary” for viewers to learn more about the featured figure.

		<description>Gordon Ramsay Spices
Packaging, Identity, Typography
&#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/nancy-spice_905.jpg" width="905" height="603" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/nancy-spice_o.jpg" data-mid="16716371"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Challenge: Create a spice line for chef Gordon Ramsay.

Solution: Ramsay is known for his excellence in fine cooking and for his temper
and profanity. The label captures both a sophistication and his straight-to-the-point
personality in the labeling for each of the spices.

Kiona Vineyards &#38; Winery
Packaging, Identity, Typography
&#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/Kiona_NTaing_WinePhoto_905.jpeg" width="733" height="1030" width_o="733" height_o="1030" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/Kiona_NTaing_WinePhoto_o.jpeg" data-mid="22693590"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/KionaCheninBlancLabel_905.png" width="905" height="419" width_o="2048" height_o="949" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/KionaCheninBlancLabel_o.png" data-mid="16982433"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/KionaMerlotLabel_905.png" width="905" height="419" width_o="2048" height_o="949" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/KionaMerlotLabel_o.png" data-mid="16982438"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Challenge: My left-handed brother complained to me about how metal-bound sketchbooks always get in the way. I told him to turn them upside down. He then complained the cover was upside-down.

Problem-Solving: Initially the binding would have been on the left, emphasizing the idea of a book for "Lefties." Since it is coptic-bound, left-sided binding would have provided the same smearing problem as right-sided binding.

Solution: A top-bound sketchbook provides smear-free creativity! The coptic-binding follows the pattern of metal-bound sketchbooks.

Challenge: Create coasters that express the culture of The Pink Door. The Pink Door is a cabaret themed Italian restaurant in Pike Place Post Alley (Seattle, WA). They feature live entertainment such as tap dancing, trapeze artists and musicians.

Solution: I played off their slogan "What's Behind the Pink Door?" with expressive legs in a style inspired by Toulouse Lautrec for a set of dynamic coasters.

Vessel Drinkware

(See more illustrations here.)
&#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/Vessel_NTaing_Bottles_905.jpg" width="905" height="687" width_o="905" height_o="687" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/Vessel_NTaing_Bottles_o.jpg" data-mid="22693486"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
While working at Vessel Drinkware, my designs were printed on various bottles, tumblers and mugs. Each design is often printed on more than one style of drinkware.

Durex

&#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/Durex_NTaing_905.jpg" width="905" height="678" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/3/100005/2401109/Durex_NTaing_o.jpg" data-mid="22694409"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

		<description>Hello There!

Thanks for your interest in my work!

I wish I was someone who could pretend to like something
when I don't. Lucky for me, I don't have to pretend! I love
illustration, character design, typography, storytelling, and
most of all, challenges.

My work is always full of personality, often quirky,
and sometimes even humorous. Which reminds me...

Recently, I started a comic blog! http://orangutaing.tumblr.com/

Let's talk or work together! I hope to hear from you soon!

		<description>The Overlooked: A New Perspective on History
There’s only so much history they will try to teach you in high school. My senior degree project focused on overlooked historical figures– or well known figures who’s acts went unnoticed. The framed images (illustrated characters on collaged photo backgrounds, painted over with paste to create the illusion of historical paintings) are supposed stills from a movie, supplemented with a “movie summary” for viewers to learn more about the featured figure.
